Two teachers of Gaafu Dhaal atoll Thinadhoo island are facing termination for taking part in an opposition political activity.
The Ministry of Education are looking into the issue of two leading teachers of Thinadhoo’s atoll education centre, Ahmed Ashraf and Nasrullah Afeef, who participated in a protest calling for the government to free jailed opposition lawmakers.
The ministry has given an ultimatum that the two teachers will be dismissed from the school unless they officially respond to the ministry by 2:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon. It is yet unclear whether the two teachers have presented themselves to the ministry.
The issue has sparked public outrage in Thinadhoo and an island council member, Ali Amjad, said that several parents of the school’s students had gathered in front of the school gates to protest the termination of the teachers, who teach Dhivehi Language and Accounting.
“They teach A’ level and O’ level classes. With exams around the corner, parents are very worried that [the ministry] is taking this kind of action,” said Amjad.
The councillor added that other teachers of the school are equally upset over the issue, with several threatening to resign should Ashraf and Nasrullah be fired.
Meanwhile, a senior official of the school had also participated in a political activity that was held in Thinadhoo last Friday.
