Five expatriates detained at the Maldives Correctional Service's detention centre in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale escaped in the early hours of Friday.
According to Correctional Service, the five escapees are Bangladeshi nationals who were detained under various accusations. They escaped by breaking a tin fence in the centre's compound.
"They weren't convicted. They were being detained until they could be deported," said Correctional Service's spokesperson.
Correctional Service are currently working with Maldives Police Service to find the escapees.
