The Prosecutor General’s Office is charging Villingili MP Saud Hussain with terrorism in connection to an assassination plot against Shujau Usman, a judge of the High Court.
Apart from MP Saud, the former coordinator of Ministry of Education, Ibrahim Haneef, is also charged with terrorism in the case. Haneef had previously been arrested in connection with plot.
In a press conference held Tuesday, Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham confirmed that charges against MP Saud and Haneef were forwarded to the Criminal Court on July 20.
If proven guilty, the duo would face a jail sentence between 17 – 20 years.
Meanwhile, MP Saud is currently detained for his involvement in the conflict between lawmakers and security forces last week Monday. He was arrested for forcefully entering the parliament premises though he longer holds a seat in Parliament as declared by the Elections Commission.
Saud has filed at the Supreme Court to overthrow the EC’s decision to oust him from Parliament. The top court confirmed last week that the case has been accepted.
