The Prosecutor General’s Office has forwarded charges against seven people to the Criminal Court over the murder of popular blogger and social media activist Yameen Rasheed.

Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham confirmed that charges against seven individuals were filed at the Criminal Court last Sunday. However, the PG Office has not disclosed further details on the accused.

According to PG Bisham, six are charged with committing first degree murder with a sharp object while the seventh is charged as an accomplice.

“This office will disclose information as needed when the trial proceeds. Else I believe the court will hold an open trial for this case,” said PG Bisham.

Yameen Rasheed, 29, of Addu atoll Feydhoo island was found murdered with over 30 stab wounds by the stairway of his apartment building in Male in the early hours of April 23.

The blogger had received numerous death threats prior to his murder, over which his family have filed a civil lawsuit against Maldives Police Service, claiming that Police did not take steps to protect Yameen. However, Police have countered that they took action at the time of threats.

It has been 100 days since Yameen was found murdered. His family have criticised the police for withholding information regarding the investigation’s progress and other related issues.
