The Maldives announced that the list of citizens to receive government flats from among those who applied three years ago will be publicised in September, while the flats will be handed over to the new owners before the end of this year.

The announcement was made by Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu last Thursday.

The housing ministry had previously declared that the list of eligible people from the 15,000 that applied for the 1,100 flats developed in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale would be announced in February this year but has yet to release the list.

Minister Muizzu stated that releasing the list was delayed due to complications and delays in completing flat development. He stated that the Chinese contractor developing the flats has guaranteed that the complexes will be handed over to the government in September.

The minister added that teams are revisiting the houses of applicants to look into their living conditions.

The public has raised concerns over changes in the living conditions of applicants who sent in applications for the flats three years ago. As some families would have moved while there would be marriages and more children in others, there have been several questions regarding the fairness of awarding the flats to applicants based on the government’s evaluation points from three years ago.

However, Minister Muizzu assured that the government will conclude its evaluations and hand over the flats to applicants that meet the conditions.
