Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom entered the Criminal Court early Sunday to observe the preliminary hearing of his lawmaker son Faris Maumoon, who is on trial over misusing the flag and logo of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

This marks the first time for the former president to attend a courtroom trial in recent years.

Dhiggaru MP Faris, who is detained in Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre under bribery accusations, was escorted to capital Male for the hearing early Sunday.

The lawmaker denied the charges against him during the preliminary hearing held last Thursday.

While MP Faris is undergoing trial over the misuse of PPM’s flag and logo, he was arrested last week Tuesday for allegedly bribing lawmakers to gather signatures to file the opposition lobbied motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker. The Criminal Court has ordered his detention until the end of his trial.

Currently, investigation is still underway into the bribery accusations against Faris.
