President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that he will not exert influence on any independent institutions or elected officials' powers.
In a post on social media platform X, the President said that he has not exerted influence over any such institution to date, nor would he do so in the future.
On the other hand, the government will continue to propose necessary changes to the laws to ensure the institutions are designed to work justly, fairly, without discrimination at a swift space, he said.
This assurance has come at a time when the government has proposed to grant the President the authority to appoint presidents and vice presidents of the Anti Corruption Commission and the Elections Commission. The amendment states that the President will submit to parliament his nominees for the positions.
This move has been met with heavy criticism from the opposition, stating that this would compromise the independence of these institutions.
