President Abdulla Yameen on Thursday formed a special commission to recover state assets.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office early Thursday, Attorney General Mohamed Anil announced that the Commission on State Assets Recovery comprises of Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed, President’s Office’s Minister Mohamed Mujuthaz, Khadheeja Hussain, Ibrahim Mahfooz and Mohamed Saleem. The chair of the commission is Home Minister Azleen.
AG Anil stated that the commission with a term of one year is tasked with recovering the assets and funds owed to the state, based on the reports of the Audit Office and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The attorney general added that the commission will not take on new cases, which will be dealt by independent institutions.
“The main purpose of this commission is to work to recover the hundreds of millions of Rufiyaa owed to the state,” he said in the briefing without taking questions from the press.
AG Anil added that the commission was created based on the counsel received by President Yameen during a Cabinet meeting held last Monday. The president formed the commission under the authority accorded to him by Subject 115 of the Constitution.
