It has been confirmed that the parliament sitting on the motion of no confidence filed against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh will not take place coming Monday.
The parliament administration on Wednesday cancelled the meeting of its General Purpose Committee which was scheduled for Thursday to allocate the timings for the debate.
President Abdulla Yameen had notably declared in an emergency meeting with ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s council late Tuesday that there would not be a vote on Maseeh’s no confidence motion. He made the declaration after announcing that the Elections Commission has informed the parliament that four lawmakers have left PPM.
The parliament administration confirmed it early Wednesday.
A member who attended PPM’s emergency council meeting told Mihaaru that President Yameen had stated in the meeting that with the loss of the four lawmakers, the number of parliamentarians that signed the resolution to seek a motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh will be less than the required number of 42 signatures. Thus, the president had proclaimed that the motion is now null and void and that the parliament will not hold the vote.
