The Ambassador of the United States appointed to the Maldives, Atul Keshap, proclaimed Tuesday that it is an obstruction to democracy in the Maldives to have Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon arrested.

In a tweet he posted regarding the raid and arrest of MP Faris Maumoon over allegedly bribing lawmakers to gain votes for the opposition lobbied motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker, Ambassador Keshup said that “arrests and intimidation of elected legislators including Faris impedes the normal function of Parliament, and democracy in Maldives."

Faris is now in custody of Maldives Police Service and is detained at Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre.

Meanwhile his criminal trial over unlawfully using the logo and flag of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is ongoing.
