President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Tuesday appointed Ahmed Sareer as the nation’s Foreign Secretary.
Ahmed Sareer’s appointment was heralded by his predecessor Ali Naseer’s assignment as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations.
Previously Sareer had served as the Permanent Representative to the UN since his appointment in December 2012. Sareer also served as the Maldivian Ambassador to the United States during his UN tenure.
According to the President’s Office, Sareer is appointed as the Foreign Secretary at the same level as a state minister.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Sareer is a veteran diplomat who has filled various posts in the foreign sector and diplomatic missions since 1986.
Sareer’s previous appointments in the field include:
Maldivian Ambassador to Bangladesh
Third Secretary at the Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka
Second Secretary at the Maldives Permanent Mission to the United Nations
Assistant Undersecretary, Assistant Director, Foreign Relations, Deputy Director, Director, Assistant Director General and Director General at the foreign ministry
Ahmed Sareer earned his Master’s Degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade at the Monash University in Australia.
