Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) denied to permit the resignation of 10 lawmakers who requested to leave the party after signing the joint opposition's petition to file a motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
Secretary General of PPM Abdulla Khaleel stated that a disciplinary issue was filed against the lawmakers on July 3, the date on which the motion of no confidence was submitted to Parliament. Hence PPM will reach a decision regarding their resignation after reviewing the disciplinary case.
The members are Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Musthafa, Thinadhoo North MP Saudhullah Hilmy, Thinadhoo South MP Abdulla Ahmed, Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq, Ihavandhoo MP Ahmed Abdulla, Machangolhi MP Abdulla Sinan, Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed, Hanimaadhoo MP Hussain Shahudhy and PPM parliamentary group deputy leader Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed and Fuvahmulah North MP Ali Shah.
In a tweet, MP Musthafa expressed concern over PPM's decision and declared that there is no legal barrier for any MP who wants to resign from a political party and therefore it should be allowed.
