Lawmaker of Isdhoo constituency Ahmed Rasheed confessed Tuesday that his claim of not having signed the joint opposition's resolution, to seek a motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, was false.

MP Ahmed Rasheed was among ten lawmakers of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) that signed the petition to file the no confidence motion against the speaker. However, in the press conference held right after the motion was submitted to Parliament, Isdhoo MP Ahmed Rasheed claimed that his signature on the petition was forged.

The opposition countered his claim by releasing a photograph of the lawmaker signing what appears to be a list in front of Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon, which had gone viral.

MP Rasheed admitted to the lie during a live press conference held by the ruling coalition of PPM and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) on Tuesday. He stated that he signed the resolution upon the request of a certain individual whom he described is as close to him as his parents.

He said that he later realized his mistake and had requested the opposition to remove his name from the list.
