President Abdulla Yameen on Monday appointed Judge Abdulla Areef of the Supreme Court as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) following the end of term of JSC's former president and Supreme Court's Judge Ali Hameed.
According to the Judicial Service Commission Act, the term of membership is five years. However, the Supreme Court decided previously that the member appointed from the Supreme Court will serve a two-year term in the commission.
Following the expiration of Judge Ali Hameed's term, the spot has been left vacant for a while. Judge Hameed has been hospitalised since last Thursday due to his medical condition.
According to sources, Areef will be appointed to the position during a JSC meeting scheduled for Monday.
