The prominent lawmaker of Dhangethi constituency, Ilham Ahmed, on Wednesday resigned from his posts as deputy leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s parliamentary group and chair of parliament Committee on Economic Affairs.

MP Ilham informed PPM’s parliamentary group leader Ahmed Nihan of his resignation from the posts via a message. Ilham is also notably one of ten PPM lawmakers that signed the joint opposition’s resolution to seek a motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

Currently overseas, Ilham did not specify a reason for stepping down from the posts. However, there have been recent clashes between Ilham and PPM’s leadership after he joined the ruling party again last October.

Meanwhile, another prominent lawmaker of PPM, Dhiddhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed, left the ruling party on Tuesday. MP Latheef is also a member who signed the petition to seek a no confidence vote against the speaker.
