Lawmaker of Kendhoo constituency Ali Hussain declared late Tuesday that safety is assured for the lawmakers of President Abdulla Yameen's faction of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) only with their immediate resignation from the party.

MP Ali Hussain, who is a member of opposition Jumhoory Party, added that it is likely that the peace loving lawmakers of the ruling party may face bitter consequences if they remain in PPM.

As an example, he stated that a precedent may be issued for the lawmakers that they may lose their seat in Parliament if they vote against the party’s whip line. He said that should these lawmakers be caged by such a precedent, it would cause great personal harm for them as well as to reform efforts. Hence the best possible solution for such a situation is to resign from PPM, he added.

He also made the remark in a tweet he posted late Tuesday.

MP Ali Hussain's comment comes in the wake of a motion of no confidence submitted to the parliament against Speaker Abdulla Maseeh for the third time with 45 signatures. Ten members of the ruling PPM signed the joint opposition's petition to seek the motion, which has added more fuel to the heated situation.
