Foreign experts appointed as CEO and Chair of Development Bank

Noel Gregor Paterson-Jones has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Development Bank. Paterson-Jones is a financial expert from the United Kingdom.

Noel Gregor Paterson-Jones has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Development Bank. Paterson-Jones is a financial expert from the United Kingdom.

Along with Paterson-Jones, Aruni Gunathilake from Singapore has been appointed as Chairperson.

Both Paterson-Jones and Gunathilake have extensive experience working at international financial institutes.

Paterson-Jones last served as Chief Investment Officer of the National Infrastructure Fund in Saudi Arabia. From 2013 to 2016, he was the Managing Director of the UK Green Investment Bank. Earlier, from 2004 to 2013, he was the Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Waterford Securities.

He completed his studies in the field of finance at Oxford University.

Gunathilake also has 25 years of experience in the financial sector. She last served as Chairperson of Hatton National Bank in Sri Lanka for two years. Prior to this, from 2016 to 2021, she was Head of Corporate Banking at People's Bank in Sri Lanka. She has also worked at Singapore's Standard Chartered Bank.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with both Paterson-Jones and Gunathilake today. After the meeting, the President emphasized that the establishment of the development bank would contribute significantly towards expanding the Maldives' economy and is a historical step in the country's financial sector.

Last Thursday, three other appointments were made to the bank's Board of Directors. The three appointees include one Maldivian and two foreigners. The Maldivian appointee to the board is Ahmed Ali. He is joined by Saeed AbduNasir Bin Saeed Hassan Al Junaid from Singapore and Robert Daniel Carter from the United Kingdom.
