The advisor of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, met with senior officials of the party late Saturday.
According to a tweet by PPM’s parliamentary group leader Ahmed Nihan, the president met with the leadership of PPM including Nihan, the party’s deputy leaders Moosa Zameer and Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Secretary General Abdulla Khaleel, and PG deputy leader Ibrahim Falaah.
The meeting took place amidst political tension heated by the opposition’s declaration that members of the ruling party are in favour of the opposition coalition’s attempt to seek a motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh. Opposition lawmakers have claimed that some government-aligned members of Parliament have given their signatures to submit the motion.
Meanwhile, messages of PPM parliamentary group’s viber chat were recently leaked to media, which show that PPM lawmakers are of clashing opinions regarding the issue of Speaker Maseeh.
