Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar concludes official visit to Maldives, departs to India

The Indian External Affairs Minister concluded his three day visit to the Maldives, and departed to India after high level meetings, and handover ceremonies of Indian funded projects in the country.

India's External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar concluded his official visit to the Maldives, and has departed the country today.

The Minister arrived in Maldives on Friday, at Velana International Airport (VIA) and departed from Gan International Airport (GIA) in Addu City.

During the visit, Minister Jaishankar with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as well as Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, engaged in diplomatic discussions.

Along with these meetings, the Minister's trip included the handover ceremony of multiple sewerage system development projects carried out in 28 islands of Maldives. These projects were funded by the line of credit extended by India's EXIM bank.

Minister Jaishankar also traveled to Addu City, and participated in the hand over ceremony of the reclamation and shore protection project in the city as well as the inauguration of the four-lane detour link road which was also funded under EXIM bank's line of credit.

Apart from the ceremonies and meetings with government officials, Minister Jaishankar also met with opposition party Maldivian Democratic Part (MDP)'s president and former Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid last night.

Regarding his trip to the island nation, Minister Jaishankar expressed his gratitude to be able to visit the Maldives again, and said that as this is his first visit since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, he hopes to be able to observe the joint achievements of the two countries during the trip.

He also said in a press conference following his meeting with Minister Moosa Zameer that discussions would be held to chart out the aspirational blueprint for the coming years of what he described would be "a truly multifaceted partnership".

"Over the next 3 days, we will be showcasing the results of our partnership and demonstrate how it has enabled the Maldives government to build infrastructure, broaden the economic base, make the economy more robust and resilient," he said.
