Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has said today that the parliament will remain committed to ensuring rights defined in the Constitution are guaranteed, and State Institutions are held accountable.

The Speaker made this remarks today as the country marks the 16th anniversary of the ratification of the current Maldives Constitution.

Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim had served as Speaker of the Special Parliament that had worked on compiling the current Constitution. Members of the Special Parliament included current Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim as well.

Speaker Abdul Raheem extended thanks to Gasim and other members of the Special Parliament, recognizing their contribution towards compiling the current Constitution.

The current Constitution was formed under the reform agenda announced by then President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in 2004. Under that agenda, the Constitution was changed, now including the separation of powers, guarantees of many democratic rights and multiple other changes.
