President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Sunday ratified the amendment to the Courts of Judicature Act to increase the number of judges in the High Court to eleven.
The parliament had passed the amendment, which was lobbied on behalf of the government by Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah, without any changes.
Previously, the number of judges in the High Court numbered nine. Following the president’s ratification, a period of three months will be provided to appoint the given number of judges to the High Court.
Currently, the High Court of the Maldives has only seven judges as two have resigned.
According to the amendment, the number of judges will only increase in capital Male’s High Court while there will be no changes in other branches.
