US lauds opposition efforts to ensure democracy, human rights

The Ambassador of the United States to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Atul Keshap, highlighted the efforts of the opposition to establish political freedom and democracy in the Maldives.

In a tweet he posted Wednesday after meeting with top opposition leaders, he stated that he is impressed by their courage, principle and patriotism.

The meeting with opposition leaders focussed on the current political situation of the Maldives as well as the obstructions they face in conducting political activities.

Ambassador Atul Keshup has also met with President Abdulla Yameen and stated that he highlighted that the US always wants to see an enduring democracy and peace in the Maldives.

Speaking at the Ramadan breakfast banquet held at Hotel Jen on Wednesday with political leaders, Keshap stressed that US would want to see human rights ensured for all Maldivian citizens.

He further stated that the US is proud to support the Maldives at all times and ensured that they will be lay efforts in advancing the standard of living in the Maldives as well as ensuring freedom of expression and other fundamental rights.
