Police interrogated Adam Azim, the younger brother of jailed former defence minister Mohamed Nazim, regarding his statements on a program broadcast on local television channel Sangu TV, stated his lawyer Ali Zahir on Monday.

The former managing director of State Trading Organisation (STO) and the current minister of Maldives United Opposition (MUO)’s shadow cabinet was arrested last Thursday under allegations of working to topple the government and spreading false information regarding the judiciary of the Maldives.

Police interrogated Adam Azim on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with an interval in between. According to his lawyer Ali Zahir, the interrogation focused on Adam Azim’s remarks which the lawyer claim were atypical to the talk of most politicians.

“If we’re to investigate everything politicians say on TV programs, then the police will have nothing to do but to probe everything [politicians] normally say,” remarked the lawyer, saying that the accusations against his client are pointless.

Lawyer Zahir said that Azim was originally accused under Sections 532 and 533 of the Penal Code. He received an additional accusation under Section 610 during the investigation. His lawyer declared that Azim responded to every inquiry.

Sections 532 and 533 concern “resisting or obstructing a law enforcement officer or custodial officer” and “obstructing administration of law or other government function” respectively, while Section 610 concerns “rioting” and “forceful overthrow of the government”.

Meanwhile, Azim has filed to appeal the remand of six days issued by the Criminal Court upon his arrest.
