Maldives Police Service arrested Adam Azim, the brother of former Minister of Defence, Colonel Mohamed Nazim, early Thursday.

Azim, who was the former Managing Director of State Trading Company (STO), was arrested over allegedly attempting to topple the government and spreading misinformation about the judiciary of the Maldives.

He was arrested in his house under a court order.

The order issued by the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Abdul Baari Yoosuf, stated that Azim is suspected of inciting hatred towards the judiciary and circulating false information regarding the judiciary.

The court order also read that the arrest warrant was issued as Azim may attempt to tamper with evidence, adding that his presence is classified as a threat to the community.

Meanwhile, his brother Nazim has been convicted of illegal weapons possession and is serving an 11-year jail sentence, but is currently under house arrest until the end of Ramadan.
