Police have deployed a special team in the southernmost atoll of Addu to find the policeman that went missing last Sunday when a dinghy he was in allegedly capsized.

Police spokesperson confirmed Wednesday that Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have not let up efforts in their search for Corporal Sumaid Mohamed, 27, of Hithadhoo island who was lost to sea near Gan island.

Sumaid had gone fishing with two other men in the dinghy before it was struck by a strong wave and capsized. The two men, Ibrahim Naif and Hussain Saeed, had safely swum to a nearby uninhabited island and then waded across to Shangri-la Resort to seek help after the incident.

Mihaaru understands that Police have questioned Ibrahim Naif, of Feydhoo island, and taken his statement. However, Police are yet to disclose further details of their search as the investigation is still ongoing.

Sumaid’s mobile phone and fishing rod have been recovered from the uninhabited island while the “capsized” dinghy was also later found. However, the dinghy still contained most of the objects stashed inside, thus leading to questions from Sumaid’s family whether the dinghy had truly been overturned.

Police have also admitted that they have yet to confirm whether it had “capsized” as claimed.
