Al Arabiyya news reported Monday that the Maldives has severed all diplomatic ties with Qatar.

Mihaaru has not been able to receive comment from the government of the Maldives on this claim yet.

The article appeared just hours after Egypt and the Gulf states of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates announced that they have cut off ties with Qatar and kicked the country out of their military coalition. The Gulf states and Egypt have released a deadline of two days for Qatari people in the four nations to return to their home country.

The four nations have accused Qatar of working to wreak uproar and dispute in the Middle-east, declaring that Qatar is backing terrorist organisations including the Muslim Brotherhood and Iran-backed rebels. Meanwhile, a coalition led by Saudi Arabia which has been fighting the rebel organisation Houthi in Yemen for over two years has separately announced Qatar’s expulsion from the coalition.

Saudi Arabia has closed all air and land routes to Qatar while the UAE has announced that its national carrier Etihad will stop operations to Qatar from Tuesday onwards.

Following the announcement, the foreign ministry of Qatar released a statement refuting the serious accusations made against the country, and expressing deep sorrow over the isolation.
