Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim on Tuesday departed for Sri Lanka as a representative of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to provide financial aid to people displaced in the recent flooding and mudslides in the South Asian neighbour.

The President’s Office did not disclose the amount of funds being provided from the Maldives to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is currently facing the worst monsoon rains to hit the country over the past 14 years. The death toll from flooding and mudslides have reached over 160 while half a million people have been displaced from their homes and evacuated to safer grounds.
