The city council of capital Male announced that the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected councillors has been scheduled for June 3 at Ghiyasuddin International School.

Male City Council had been struggling for a month to secure a venue for the ceremony. Ghiyasuddin was finally confirmed on Sunday and the council stated that they hope for government officials to take part in the ceremony.

Male City Council had first lobbied for a hall at Dharubaaruge convention centre to which the housing ministry had initially agreed, placing a rent of MVR 13,000 for the night. However, the government later decided against leasing the centre for the ceremony.

The council had since been looking into booking a hall at one of the schools. Most schools have objected to the council’s request as the education ministry has banned the leasing of school properties for political purposes. However, Shifa noted that the swearing-in ceremony does not count as a political activity.

The new councillors were elected in the Local Council Election that took place earlier this month. Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has won all the seats sans one on the Male City Council.
