The government of the Maldives announced this Saturday as the first day of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan this year.
The announcement was made late Thursday at a special ceremony held for the moon sighting at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. The special committee for moon sighting declared that the new moon was not sighted from any Islamic country by dusk on Thursday and, thus, the first of Ramadan this year is May 27, Saturday.
The statement released by Islamic Minister Mohamed Ziyad urged the people to be vigilant regarding Islamic rituals during the holy month of Ramadan.
