A man serving three years in jail has been sentenced for life over attempting to smuggle drugs into prison.

The Criminal Court passed the verdict on Tuesday, sentencing Ahmed Mihad of capital Male for life with a penalty of MVR 100,000.

Mihad was initially sentenced to three years in March 2013 for abusing drugs. However, he was caught hiding 16 grams of Cannabis in his boxers while being returned to Maafushi Prison from Male.

The Drugs Act of the Maldives states that possession of over 14 grams of Cannabis carries a lifetime sentence and a penalty ranging from MVR 100,000 to MVR 1 million. According to the Act, any drugs discovered on a person including in their garments will be considered as theirs unless there is evidence stating otherwise.
