Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s lawmaker son, Faris Maumoon together with Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim, addressed an opposition rally late Wednesday held at main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s main activity hub for the first time.

This marks the first time that a child of Former President Maumoon gave an address at an MDP podium. MDP had been the chief criticizer of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom during and after his presidency until recently, when the former president shifted sides to the opposition.

Speaking at the rally, MP Faris thanked MDP for giving him the opportunity.

Highlighting that the political situation of the Maldives is witnessing a moment never seen before in history, Faris described it as a hopeful moment during this time of weakness.

Regarding the Local Council Election held recently, Faris claimed that members of ruling Party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had given their votes to opposition candidates of MDP and Jumhoory Party, and to independent candidates despite several good candidates put forward from PPM itself.

The lawmaker of Dhiggaru constituency added that, despite the difference in their political views, the people are now witnessing that the opposition coalition as a whole are working with the nation’s best interest at heart.

Noting that all four opposition parties will run for various elections against each other, Faris stated that political works will have boundaries and that the four parties have agreed upon it.
