Former President Mohamed Nasheed on Tuesday urged the City Councils to regain the powers of the Local Government System again.

He made the statement during a phone conference with the City Councilors elected to capital Male, Addu City and Fuvahmulah City. Regarding the conference, Former President Nasheed’s office said that he has guaranteed full assistance to the councils in their work.

In addition, Nasheed highlighted the importance of financial security for the councils. He urged the councils to find paths to receive a share of the profits earned via the use of islands' natural resources.

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has won the majority of seats on Island Councils and the super majority of City Councils as well during the recent Local Council Elections.

Meanwhile, the parliament has amended the Decentralization Act to grant the president authority to appoint members to the board of the Local Government Authority (LGA).
