The Elections Commission (EC) has appointed Ali Nash'ath as its Vice-President.
Ismail Habeeb, who was the previous Vice President of the Elections Commission, retired recently after serving two terms. As a result, the Election Commission convened a meeting today to choose a new Vice-President.
Ali Nash’ath was appointed Vice-President of the Elections Commission at a general meeting held in accordance with the Elections Commission Act.
This will be Nash’ath’s second term in the Election Commission. On November 16 2023, he was reappointed to the commission for a second term. He was initially appointed as a member of the EC in 2018.
Habeeb resigned from the EC yesterday after 21 years of service. He resigned from the EC after serving two five-year terms as a member of the commission. According to the law, a member can only serve two terms.
Habeeb was initially appointed as a member of the EC on March 13, 2013 under the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. He was then re-elected for a second term in 2019.
Even before being appointed as a member of the Elections Commission, Habeeb served as an employee at the commission's office.
