Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has stated that its 'Maha Jarraaf' (hopper dredger) has been repaired and is back in service after having been out of commission for an extended period of time.
MTCCs Head of Projects Department Ahmed Latheef stated in a press conference last week that while land reclamation and dredging is one of the main areas of work undertaken by the company, the 'Maha Jarraaf' (hopper dredger) used in these projects has been damaged and out of commission for mtover a year now.
Today, MTCC further revealed that July last year marked 20 months since the hopper dredger had been put out of commission, preventing the company from proceeding with several land reclamation projects that it had planned to conduct.
MTCC said that they had been forced to lease a dredger at a high price from a foreign company for this duration, which resulted in decreasing any profits the company would have made through the land reclamation projects conducted within the period.
MTCC alleged that the 'Maha Jarraaf' had had to be grounded mainly due to the negligence of the previous management in maintaining such an expensive piece of machinery. They said that the hopper dredger had not received proper maintenance and care as per schedule.
The 'Maha Jarraaf' is currently being used in land reclamation in Ungoofaaru, on a project worth MVR 71 million.
Under this project, an area of 13.07 hectares will be reclaimed.
