The Elections Commission (EC) has decided to have a by-election of Thaa atoll Madifushi island constituency after a complaint was filed and reviewed of a wrong ballot paper cast in Madifushi's ballot box in the Local Council Elections.
According to EC member Ahmed Akram, there had been an error in the ballot given to one of the voters which could have brought a change to the results, as the top four candidates had received nearly equal number of total votes.
According to the temporary results published so far, the top two candidates of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abbas Mohamed and Ali Haseen received a total of 389 votes. The third candidate, of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), received a total of 388 votes while the fourth candidate, of PPM, received a total of 387 votes.
The by-election will be held among the top four candidates only.
The other three candidates who competed for the Madifushi constituency include two MDP candidates and an independent candidate. Their results include Ahmed Naseem who received 356 votes, Ahmed Adhil with 357 votes while the only independent candidate, Ali Rasheed, received only nine votes.
Madifushi is the first constituency for a by-election to be announced due to a complaint. Another by-election was announced for an island council as candidates had received the same number of total votes. The EC stated that a date will be later announced for the election.
