The government coalition on Wednesday night began campaign rallies for the Presidential Elections 2018 after their defeat in the Local Council Election held last Saturday.

The ruling coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) began their campaign rallies at MDA’s activity hub in front of Artificial Beach in Henveiru ward of capital Male. According to the coalition, rallies will be regularly held at the new campaign hub.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties have also been conducting regular rallies at Jumhoory Party’s activity hub in Kunooz house of Maafannu ward. However, as the Criminal Court released the leader of Jumhoory Party, Qasim Ibrahim, on Wednesday under strict conditions to halt meetings and gatherings with people that incite dispute and to halt the use of his properties to hold activities that incite dispute, the opposition coalition has decided to hold their rallies at MDP's main hub instead.

Kunooz is the main office of Jumhoory Party and the land is registered solely in Qasim’s name. Meanwhile, Qasim’s legal team is reviewing how to continue the use of Kunooz according to the conditions of the Criminal Court.

With the beginning of PPM/MDA's campaign rallies, the ruling coalition has also displayed illustrations of First lady Fathimath Ibrahim, Leader of MDA Ahmed Siyam and top officials of MDA at the hub.

The majority of Cabinet ministers and top officials of PPM/MDA took part in the rally. The ruling party stated that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom will participate in the days to come.
