Although MDP is not officially contesting in these constituencies, the Deputy Chairperson said that the party might back independent candidates who are running for those seats.
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to not contest in four constituencies in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
MDP Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed (Ibrey) stated today that the party will be contesting in 89 out of the total 93 constituencies.
MDP will not be contesting in:
- Vaavu Atoll Fulidhoo constituency
- Thaa Atoll Guraidhoo constituency
- Faafu Atoll Nilandhoo constituency
- Fuvahmulah North constituency
Although MDP is not officially contesting in these constituencies, the Deputy Chairperson said that the party might back independent candidates who are running for those seats. The party is yet to come to a formal decision on the matter.
Earlier, the party said that no candidates had applied to contest for Nilandhoo and Eydhafushi constituencies even in the party primaries. However, an independent candidate running for Eydhafushi constituency recently joined MDP, upon which he was given the party's ticket.
MDP primaries saw voting for 40 constituencies, where more than one candidate had applied for the tickets. 50 candidates were granted their tickets without the need for primaries.
