The Elections Commission (EC) has said that the deadline for filing nominations for the upcoming parliamentary elections will not be extended, even if the election date is changed. With only four days remaining until the deadline, a total of 18 candidates have submitted their nominations so far.

EC had initially scheduled the parliamentary elections for March 17. Despite efforts by the parliament to postpone the elections, the Election Commission is proceeding with all necessary preparations.

Vice President of the Elections Commission, Ismail Habeeb, said that if nominations are submitted at the last minute and there are issues with the forms, there may not be an opportunity to correct them.

The deadline for filing nominations is 14:00 hrs on Wednesday. EC opened nomination submissions for candidates to contest the 93 constituencies on January 30.

According to the law, the election must be held 120 days in advance of the conclusion of the parliament session, which falls on March 17. However, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has proposed an amendment to the General Elections Act to avoid holding elections during the month of Ramadan.

The Temporary Committee approved the amendment to the General Elections Act to hold parliamentary elections 10 days after the end of Ramadan.
