China has handed over to the Maldives government five renewable energy operated desalination plants set up in various islands through free aid from the country.
Desalination plants were established in five islands through China aid and handed over to the government of Maldives on Tuesday.
These desalination plans run on renewable energy.
The five islands where these plants were established are Raa Atoll Alifushi, Haa Alif Atoll Kelaa, Lhaviyani Atoll Olhuvelifushi, Kaafu Atoll Kaashidhoo and Gaafu Alif Atoll Dhaandhoo.
Each plant has the capacity to produce 200 tonnes of water per day. A 200 kilowatt solar panel was also placed with each plant. Additionally, the Kaashidhoo plant also has a 100 kilowatt wind turbine.
The project cost MVR 199 million. The project was initiated during the 2022 visit of China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Maldives.
The document confirming completion of this project was signed by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muhthalib and China Ambassador to the Maldives Wang Lixin.
