The Criminal Court on Friday added four days to the remand of arrested Jumhoory Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim, effective Saturday onwards.

The decision was made during the second remand hearing held on Friday. The court ruled to keep Qasim under custody in a place recommended by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Noting that the judge requested to bring new evidence to extend his remand during the first remand hearing, Qasim’s lawyers noted that no such evidence was presented by the state during Friday’s hearing.

Qasim was arrested April 21 over allegedly bribing lawmakers and attempting to topple the government.

The judges are authorized to give a maximum remand of 15 days for any criminal suspects brought to the court during the first remand hearing and additional days following.

The High Court has also backed the decision to remand Qasim for 15 days.

Meanwhile, Qasim’s is also undergoing another criminal trial for allegedly bribing lawmakers and influencing votes.
