Today marks the commencement of a new academic initiative for Grade 4 students in select schools, as nationalism is introduced as a distinct subject. Although initially piloted in 11 schools across Male' and atolls, the official integration into all schools is set to take place with the commencement of the upcoming academic year in May.
The primary objective behind incorporating nationalism into the curriculum is to cultivate a sense of pride and love for one's country among students. The comprehensive curriculum will cover nationalism across various grades, with the subject being organized into different key stages.
The following schools have taken the lead in implementing patriotism education:
- Baa Atoll Educational Center (Baa Eydhafushi)
- Laamu Atoll Educational Center (Laamu Hinnavaru)
- Magudhoo School (Faafu Atoll)
- Aboobakuru School (Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo)
- Hithadhoo School - GS03
- Mohammad Jamaluddin School (Fuvahmulah School)
- Kalaafanu School
- Thaajuddeen School
- Muhyiddin School
- Salahuddin School (Hulhumale' Phase 2)
- Vaavu Atoll Educational Center (Vaavu Felidhoo)
In conjunction with the introduction of nationalism as a subject, meetings have been conducted with these schools to provide essential information and guidance on incorporating nationalism into the curriculum.
The decision to teach nationalism as a separate subject stems from a presidential pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The President emphasized that fostering nationalism in the hearts of young minds is crucial for bringing about peace in the country. The President believes that nurturing the minds of the youth and promoting values such as upbringing and morality through the inclusion of nationalism in the curriculum is a pathway to achieving national harmony.
The upcoming academic year of 2023 is scheduled to conclude in April due to the modifications implemented by the government to the academic calendar. Consequently, the subsequent academic year of 2024 is set to commence in May.
