Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) filed a lawsuit at Civil Court against two Villa companies of Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim to find USD 37.5 million owed to the state.

The amounts owed to the state are fines and rents of some islands leased to Villa Shipping and Trading which rounds up to USD 18.9 million, and Villa Hotels and Resorts which is equivalent to USD 18.6 million.

The lawsuit against Villa Shipping and Trading accuses the company of not paying the rent and fines of the Thaa Atoll Elaa island, while the lawsuit against Villa Hotels is over not paying the rent and fines of the islands Vaavedhifalhu and Bolidufaru in Kaafu atoll.

Prior to the lawsuit, MIRA had frozen the accounts of Villa companies under the enforcement policy.

The state had also taken back the three islands Elaa, Bolidufaru and Vaavedifalhu back in 2015 over violations of the agreement. Later the decision was also upheld in the High Court.

Moreover, some other islands have also been taken back by the government from Villa, a decision which has been backed by the High Court.
