The Ministry of Education has not officially decided to conduct classes on Saturdays to compensate for the delay in the start of the new academic year.
A senior official of the ministry made this statement when asked by Mihaaru News about the official decision to conduct classes on Saturdays.
He said that the ministry has decided to schedule the teachers' professional development meeting, which occurs twice each term, on Saturdays. Currently, teachers' professional development activities are mostly held on Thursdays in many schools. While it may be a school day, regular classes are not conducted.
"Then we have decided to hold the PTA meeting on Saturday as well. The PTA meeting is now held on school days. We have decided to change it to Saturday," the official said.
He said that the talks about making Saturday an official day of teaching in schools are misleading. He clarified that some schools already independently hold classes on Saturdays in certain cases, and there is no restriction to that.
Some parents and teachers said that due to the postponement of the start of the new academic year teaching on Saturdays might be necessary to cover the syllabus. However, the ministry believes that the syllabus can be covered without resorting to this measure.
