Suspect arrested over murder of social media activist

Police arrested a person suspected of being connected to the murder of social media activist and blogger Yameen Rasheed, and the Criminal Court added 15 days to his remand on Monday.

Mihaaru understands that the 18 year old youth, hailing from an island in Gaafu Dhaal atoll, was arrested at dawn Monday. He is suspected of trailing and keeping track of Yameen’s movements before he was brutally killed on April 23. The suspect also lives close to the building where Yameen lived and where his body was found with multiple stab wounds.

Police had also raided the suspect’s house early Monday prior to his arrest.

In a recent press conference, Police had declared that they have identified the culprits behind Yameen’s murder and released pictures of two men that were caught on CCTC footage in Yameen’s buildiing. However, later they informed Yameen’s parents that the culprits are unknown.

Yameen Rasheed had received numerous death threats prior to his murder, which he had filed with the police. A number of people had also been summoned to Police Headquarters for questioning regarding the threats.
