Local firm to develop domestic airport in Maafaru

The Maldives government awarded development of a domestic airport in the island of Maafaru in Noonu atoll to Sun Siyam Resorts.

The Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer and Sun Siyam Resorts’ Director Ahmed Mauroof, who is a member of the ruling coalition partner Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and lawmaker of Kendhikulhudhoo, signed the agreement on Wednesday. Sun Siyam Resorts is a company of which MDA’s leader Ahmed Siyam is a stakeholder.

In a statement, the Tourism Ministry stated that Sun Siyam Resorts propose to develop the Maafaru domestic airport under a public private partnership policy. The company will al

so developed a transit hotel in the airport as well as reclaim a part of the island’s lagoon for the development of a resort.

According to the ministry, Sun Siyam Resorts will develop a state-of-the-art domestic airport with a runway of 1,800 metres and capacity to service six jet simultaneously. The company proposes to complete the project within two years.

Prior to Sun Siyam Resorts, development of the Maafaru airport was awarded to Millennium Capital Management Pvt Ltd which belongs to local capitalist Hamid Ismail. However, the government terminated the agreement with Millennium Capital over contract violations.
