Parliament has accepted Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s motion to dismiss Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla from her position, and has issued a 14 day notice effective from today.

The motion was submitted last Monday with signatures from 50 members of parliament. This includes 49 members from MDP and independent member Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla.

The motion notes that Eva obstructed the no confidence motion against former Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, exerted undue influence in different forms, and prioritized self interest over her duties.

The motion alleges that Eva has deliberately contravened the regulations on multiple occassions.

The motion also went on to say that she had acted against Article 75 of the Constitution in refusing to recuse herself from presiding over the no confidence motion while Nasheed and her are related.

The Secretary General of the Parliament has informed members that the motion has been accepted and Eva has been issued with the required 14 day notice.

The General Purpose Committee has also decided that Eva will be given a duration of 30 minutes within which to make her statement.
