The government has established a special council for tourism development which will be chaired by the President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The council, titled "Visitor Economy Council", was formed at the first cabinet meeting of the newly inaugurated government.

At the press conference held by the President's Office on Sunday, November 19, the Under-Secretary for Public Policy of the office Mohamed Firzul Abdulla Khaleel said that the tourism industry is the one the economy of the country is most dependent on, which was why President Dr. Muizzu pledged prioritization for the industry's growth and progress.

Firzul added that the 'Visitor Economy Council' has been formed to address the tourism industry collectively and work for its progression.

"One of the key mandates of this council would be to diversify the tourism economy in the country," Firzul commented.

The President's Office Under-Secretary said that the council aims to foster the growth of new tourism niches in the Maldives including medical, educational, and transport tourism instead of an exclusive focus on leisure tourism.

Besides the tourism council, the cabinet at its first official meeting formed both the social and economic councils as well.

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef will chair the social council while Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed will chair the economic council.
