The newly appointed Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced plans to launch tertiary academic opportunities for local Imams to seek Philosophy of Doctorate (PhD) degrees.
The minister, via X, said that Imams who have read for, and completed Masters Degree in a relevant Islamic field will be entitled for the PhD academic courses from international universities.
Minister Shaheem further pledged to enhance academic opportunities for Imams from Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia.
The first decision taken by the new minister after assuming office was to transfer the mandate of the Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo Islamic Center under the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM).
The minister said the Islamic center will be handed over to IUM on coming Tuesday, November 21, which he said will facilitate seeking academic opportunities for students in fields related to Islam without migrating to Male' City for education.
"It will be a center of Islamic history and culture," Shaheem said.
