Maldives Police Service proclaimed to have been investigating the death threats made against social media activist Yameen Rasheed prior to his murder on Sunday.

Yameen Rasheed, 29, of Addu atoll Feydhoo island was found dead with 14 stab wounds by the staircase of his house in capital Male in the early hours of Sunday morning. His murder has incited harsh criticism against Police with several people accusing them of “neglecting” the numerous death threats Yameen had received and the cases he had filed at the police requesting protection.

Police refuted the accusations Sunday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan told Mihaaru that they had taken action regarding the cases submitted by Yameen. According to Shifan, Police had questioned suspects in connection with Yameen’s latest case and kept him updated of their findings. However, Shifan did not disclose whether any arrests had been made over the death threats.

In a statement, Police announced that a special team has been put together to investigate Yameen’s murder as a “serious crime”. Police assured that the team is making the utmost use of police resources to uncover the truth behind Yameen’s death.

People close to Yameen have reported that he had been out late working on the eve of his death. The last person he contacted was a friend staying overseas around 2:34 a.m. on April 23 and his murder was reported to Police at 2:59 p.m. by another resident of the building where Yameen lived.
