Over 67,800 jobs created in three years: Youth Minister

As part of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s electoral pledge to create 94,000 jobs during the first term of his administration, over 67,800 jobs have been created so far over the past three years, proclaimed Minister of Youth and Sports Iruthisham Adam on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the youth ministry, the minister shed light on the different sectors and industries in which jobs have been created:

Civil Service – Over 3,000 jobs

State run companies – Over 5,000 jobs

Tourism – Over 18,000 jobs

Fisheries – Over 6,000 jobs

Other sectors – Over 34,000 jobs

“We wish to still further increase employment opportunities. Hence, we’re currently working to mark a youth day and hold a youth challenge,” said Minister Iruthisham.

The minister went on to say that the state is also looking to establish more sports facilities, which will also create more jobs. Noting that several major development projects are ongoing in various islands, she added that sports arenas will also be developed in islands boasting large populations.

Minister Iruthisham highlighted that the this year’s state budget allocates MVR 300 million to the Youth and Sports Ministry, out of which over MVR 167 million is to conduct sports and youth activities. She also noted that a number of futsal fields, volleyball courts and bashi courts have already been established.

The ministry added that some projects have been put on hold due to lack of cooperation from some island councils. Hence, the ministry is looking to conduct projects in islands under their direct management.
